What dermal fillers do, and what they will not do
As we age, the face loses volume and support. Cheeks flatten, the space under the eyes hollows, lips thin, and the folds from nose to mouth deepen. Dermal fillers are gels injected under the skin to put that support back where it has gone.
Most fillers here are hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already makes, which holds water and gives soft, immediate fullness. We use Belotero, a soft hyaluronic acid filler suited to delicate areas such as under the eyes and fine lines around the mouth. For structure and collagen building, Janeeh also uses Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler that works differently and has its own page.
Janeeh builds filler in small amounts and checks your face from every angle as she goes. The aim is that people notice you look rested, and nobody can tell what you had done.
Where dermal fillers are used
Lips
Lip filler adds shape, definition or gentle fullness, and can even out a lip that is higher on one side.
Cheeks
Restores the lift over the cheekbone that softens with age, which can also soften the fold below it.
Chin and jawline
Adds projection to a small chin and a cleaner line along the jaw, for a more balanced profile.
Smile lines, marionette lines and lines around the mouth
Softens the folds from nose to mouth, the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and fine etched lines around the lips.
Under-eye hollows
Fills the tear trough, the sunken area under the eyes that casts a tired shadow.
Good candidates for dermal fillers
- Adults who have lost volume in the cheeks, lips or under the eyes
- Anyone who wants a subtle change they can build on
- Patients with deep smile or marionette lines at rest
- People who want lip filler that still looks like their own lips
Lip filler, done to look like your own lips
Good lip filler starts with your proportions. Janeeh looks at the balance between your upper and lower lip, the border, and how your lips move when you talk and smile, then adds small amounts where they help. A first lip treatment is usually modest. You can add more at a later visit, and you can see the result first.
If you mostly want your upper lip to show more when you smile, a Botox lip flip may be all you need.
Your filler appointment, step by step
Consultation
Janeeh studies your face at rest and in motion, asks about your health history and past filler, and shows you where volume would help. You get your total before treatment starts.
Numbing
A topical numbing cream goes on the treatment area first to keep you comfortable.
Treatment
She places filler in small amounts and checks the result in the mirror with you as she works.
Aftercare
Expect swelling that eases over the first 3 days and settles fully within 2 weeks. Bruising is common and fades within a few days to a week.
Is dermal filler safe?
FDA-approved dermal fillers are well studied, and most side effects are mild and short-lived: swelling, redness and bruising. The most serious risk is rare. If filler is injected into a blood vessel, it can block blood flow, which is why an injector's knowledge of facial anatomy matters as much as their eye.
Hyaluronic acid filler has a safety net: an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve it if a result needs correcting. Radiesse cannot be dissolved this way, which is one reason Janeeh chooses carefully where each filler goes.

How long do dermal fillers last?
Dermal fillers last from several months to a few years, depending on the filler and where it is placed. Areas that move a lot, such as the lips, tend to break filler down sooner than the cheeks or chin. Your metabolism plays a part too, so Janeeh plans touch-ups around how your own result holds.
Does getting lip filler hurt?
Lip filler is generally well tolerated, and a topical numbing cream goes on first to reduce discomfort. You may feel pressure or a brief sting as each small amount goes in. Janeeh works slowly and checks in with you, so you can pause at any point during your lip filler treatment.
How long is recovery after dermal fillers?
Recovery after dermal fillers is mostly swelling, which eases quickly over the first 3 days and settles fully within 2 weeks. Bruising is common and fades within a few days to a week. Filler has minimal downtime, and the final shape of your result is clear once the swelling is gone.
Can dermal filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid dermal filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if a result needs correcting. That reversibility is one reason hyaluronic acid is the usual choice for lips and under-eyes. Radiesse is a different material and cannot be dissolved, so Janeeh places it only where its lasting structure is the goal.
Which dermal fillers do you use?
Benicia Medical Aesthetics uses Belotero, a soft hyaluronic acid filler for delicate areas such as under the eyes and fine lines around the mouth, and Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler that adds structure and builds collagen. Janeeh chooses the filler for each area at your consultation, based on your anatomy and goal.
