Neurotoxin, filler or collagen stimulator: what each one does

Every injectable on this menu does one of three jobs. Knowing which job you need is most of the decision.

  • Neurotoxins relax the muscles that crease your skin

Botox, Jeuveau and Xeomin are all botulinum toxin type A. A few small injections quiet the muscles behind frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet, so those lines soften. Results start within days and last about 3 to 4 months.

  • Fillers put back volume you have lost

Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Belotero, restore fullness in the lips, cheeks, chin, jawline and under-eyes, and soften deep folds. You see the change the same day, and it lasts from several months to a few years depending on the filler. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be dissolved if a result needs correcting.

  • Collagen stimulators rebuild the skin itself

Radiesse and PRP work more slowly. They prompt your skin to make new collagen, which firms thin, crepey skin over several months. Hyperdilute Radiesse can last 12 to 18 months. PRP under the eyes works as a series, and results vary.

How to choose the right injectable in Benicia

Start with a mirror. Frown, raise your brows and smile, then relax your face.

  • The line appears when you move and fades at rest? A neurotoxin is the tool.
  • The line or hollow is there even when your face is still? That points to filler.
  • The skin looks thin, crepey or loose, more than lined? A collagen stimulator fits better.

Many faces show a little of all three, so many plans combine them.

Choosing between the three neurotoxin brands matters less than choosing the category. The Botox page compares Botox, Jeuveau and Xeomin side by side.

One injector, from consultation to follow-up

Janeeh Miranda, MSN, FNP-C, is a board-certified nurse practitioner with more than 12 years in medicine, trained in acute care medicine and aesthetics. She leads every treatment plan and is the practice's main injector, so the person who reads your face is the one who treats it. Her approach is conservative: small amounts, a follow-up, and more only if you need it. Patients say she recommends only what they need.

Sundar Natajaran, M.D., an internal medicine physician with more than 20 years in practice, supervises the medical protocols behind every injectable. He does not perform treatments.

Questions about injectables

What is the difference between Botox and filler?

Botox and filler do different jobs. Botox is a neurotoxin that relaxes the muscles behind lines from movement, like frown lines and crow's feet. Dermal filler is a gel that restores lost volume in areas like the lips, cheeks and under-eyes. Many patients use both, because most faces show both kinds of change.

Which injectable lasts the longest?

Among the injectables at Benicia Medical Aesthetics, Radiesse and some dermal fillers last the longest. Hyperdilute Radiesse can last 12 to 18 months, and fillers last from several months to a few years depending on the product. Neurotoxins such as Botox, Jeuveau and Xeomin typically last 3 to 4 months.

Who performs injectables at Benicia Medical Aesthetics?

Janeeh Miranda, MSN, FNP-C, a board-certified nurse practitioner, plans and performs injectable treatments at Benicia Medical Aesthetics, including Botox, fillers, Radiesse and PRP. She leads every treatment plan, from the consultation to the follow-up. Sundar Natajaran, M.D., an internal medicine physician, supervises the medical protocols and does not perform treatments.

How do I know which injectable I need?

The quickest way to know which injectable you need is to watch your face move. Lines that show only when you move respond to a neurotoxin like Botox. Hollows and lines at rest point to filler. Thin, crepey skin suits Radiesse or PRP. A consultation with Janeeh confirms the plan.
